Mixed ensemble
Suggested instrumentation = flute, oboe, violin(s), cello(s), harp, piano, and snare drum
This piece is named after a wildflower in the Solanaceae family: deadly nightshade. My original intention was to capture the electrifying atmosphere of a summer night. However, witnessing physical and emotional abuse at work created in me a dysphoric and foreboding mood. The acceptance and tolerance of abuse was truly “something terrible.” Therefore the song can be thought of as a theme for the positive energy of summer, or as a warning against the darkness of an unhealthy psychology.
Sheet music includes conductor's score plus individual sheets for flute, oboe, violin, cello, harp, piano, and snare drum.
